Our Mission

Nashville RBI uses baseball and softball and the power of teams to provide inner city youth with opportunities to play, to learn and to grow, inspiring them to recognize their potential and realize their dreams.

About RBI

Nashville RBI started in 1996 with a grant from Major League Baseball. The Nashville chapter now involves more than 900 boys and girls ages 5 to 18, and is designed to promote youth interest in baseball and softball, promote greater inclusion of minorities into the mainstream of the games, increase the self-esteem of disadvantaged children, and encourage academic participation and achievement.

YMCA & Nashville RBI Team Up to Expand Athletic, Academic, Life Skills, Support for Inner City Youth

After more than 15 years of connecting kids with America’s pastime, Nashville RBI is adding another player to its roster, announcing a new partnership with the YMCA of Middle Tennessee.
The missions of Nashville RBI and the YMCA complement each other well, particularly with respect to their shared commitment to helping kids discover their potential.

“The Y and RBI share a genuine commitment to helping young people in our community get the skills they need to succeed both on and off the field,” said YMCA’s Senior Vice President of Organizational Advancement Gary Cobbs. “This partnership combines our strengths so that the real winners are our kids.”

The two nonprofits will partner to expand the reach of their respective programs and to enhance the year round support structure available to participating children. Among the many benefits of the partnership, Nashville RBI participants will enjoy expanded off-the-field services during the offseason. Participating children will be able to access existing YMCA programs and services that provide mentoring, tutoring, after school enrichment and exposure to other sports programs, while the YMCA will benefit from an established inner city sports program through which it can reach out to youth in socio-economically disadvantaged areas, one of several strategic goals the YMCA has for its youth development work in the next decade. And inner city children already taking part in other YMCA programs will now have a chance to learn more about baseball through the RBI program.

The newly renovated and expanded Northwest Family YMCA, which does not currently offer a youth baseball program, will act as a home base for the sports program under the partnership.

“Nashville RBI’s partnership with the YMCA is a grand slam for Nashville’s inner city children,” said John Ray Clemmons, Nashville RBI Board Chairman.

“Through our partnership, Nashville RBI will be able to accomplish its goal of reaching more children and providing more services in a fiscally efficient manner. If there is a silver lining in tough economic times, it is the enhanced creativity and fiscal efficiency which result from nonprofit leaders working even harder to accomplish their respective goals. Joining with the Y simply made sense in this respect. It is truly an honor to partner with such a storied organization to further serve our community.”
